Here at Nortons Dairy, we like to think we can provide a unique and personal outing for groups of all sizes. We have made it our aim to offer transparent, educational visits in order to enhance the learning experience for pupils and teachers alike.

Our trips can be made up of half or full day experiences and these can be tailored to meet the needs of your children. We can provide trips for EYFS, Key Stages 1, 2 and 3, and we have also hosted visits by a range of complex needs schools as well. Because of our wide experience of the curriculum, we are able to provide you with a cross-curricular learning experience which engages and includes children with a range of abilities and interests. We can also help with follow-up lesson ideas and information in order to create an immersive experience which carries on long after you have returned back to school.

A standard tour last for 90 minutes and consists of visiting different areas of the farm to explain what we do and why we do it. The key parts of the trip include visiting Merlin (our robotic milking machine), meeting our baby calves and learning about the range of crops we produce on our farm. However, the tour can also be extended and adapted to include butter or cheese-making demonstrations and an activity or two to make your visit more practical. This can either be specifically about our farm or about healthy eating and the countryside in general.

It is our aim to offer a personalised experience so we are happy to either do a general tour or focus on specific areas, such as food production or life cycles. This is a question which may be asked at the time of booking in order to prepare the trip to be as educational as possible. We cater for a range of curriculum subjects from English and Science to Art and Business Studies so whatever your aim, please ask and we can support you in choosing the best aims for your children.

As we are a working farm, we require all visitors to wear appropriate clothing for the time of year. If the weather isn’t so good, the main areas are undercover but moving between areas can require going outside so all visitors need to be dressed accordingly. If this is an area you would like some advice on, please ask.

We do not allow the children to touch the animals or cows while at the farm because we do not have hand washing facilities. For the 90 minute sessions we are unable to provide toilet facilities due to the nature of the trips as adults or children are not allowed to move unaccompanied around the farm. However, if you have selected a longer package, we use our local village hall which has such facilities. The village hall also allows a safe space for the children to have a lunch break.

The tour can be as educational or as fun as you’d like to make it – kids and grown-ups alike love to see the animals and machinery, but it is also a great opportunity to find out about milk, farming and the countryside around us. We charge a small fee per visitor for a tour of around 1 hour 30 mins (longer visits and tastings available by arrangement), and, of course, we have a full risk assessment available.

We are CEVAS accredited, which means that transport grant support for your trip may be available from the Clan Trust. Please contact us for details.
